The Treatment of Heart (2025)

Live performance

The Treatment of Heart (2025) is a live performance where Yuen performed a large-scale ink calligraphy while reading aloud each individual Chinese character, and curated splashes of ink as symbolic gestures of libation, with the closing act being the consumption of an entire chalice of ink.

Yuen intended the piece as a tribute to his deceased friend. 'Stomach full of ink' is a Chinese saying referring to how someone is well educated and literarily informed. Through the ritualistic and culturally intertextual performance, Yuen immortalises one's memory with words, transforming a personal connection into a shared experience.

Beside being anecdotal in nature, Yuen explores the paradoxical effect of performative art. Bringing Chinese poetry and cultural references into the western artistic context, The Treatment of Heart seeks to question how the understanding of language affects audience perception of the craft.

'Libation is done in many religion and culture. In traditional Chinese funerals, three cups of liquor are poured onto the floor before the family of the deceased take the same drink themselves. A symbolic and respectful gesture that our loved one could enjoy a drink with us, as they return to the soil.'
